CESC Limited is the pioneer in the history of generation of electricity in India. We commenced power generation and distribution in Kolkata, in 1899. The electrification of Kolkata city took place seventeen years after New York, which boasted of Electricity in 1882 and eleven years after London, which was electrified in 1888.

1690 - Job Charnok, of East India Company settles in Calcutta
1772 -  Calcutta became the capital of British India
1780 -  James Hicky published first printed news paper.
1899 -  CESC commenced power generation and distribution in Calcutta
1902 -  First Electric tram car from Esplanade to Kidderepore
1912 - The first large generating station of 15 MW capacity was erected in Cossipore
1929 -  Agnes Goinxha Bejaxhiu (Mother Teresa), came to Calcutta.
1940 -  Mulajore Generating Station commissioned
1947 - India gained Independence. Bengal was divided.
1950 -  New Cpossipore Generating Station commissioned
1979 -  CESC was converted into an Indian company

1983 -  Titagarh Generating Station commissioned
1984 - Metro, the first underground railway in India started .
1988 - CESC entered into select band of  RPG Industries.

1990 - Southeren Generating Station      ( replacement project ) commissioned.
1997 - Mother Teresa dies in Calcutta
1997 - Budge Budge Generating Station commissioned

2001 -  Calcutta has been officially renamed as 'Kolkata' from 1st Januray, 2001

HISTORY OF CITY OF JOY, KOLKATA
In 1690 Job Charnock came to the bank of the river Hooghly and identified three villages- Sutanuti, Govindapur and Kolikata (Calcutta) as a trading post of British East India Company. In 1698 East India Co. bought these three villages (Sutanuti, Kolkata, Gibondapur ) from local landlord Sabarna Chowdhury and was permitted for free trade by the Mughal emperors at an annual return of Rs. 3000. In 1756 Siraj-ud-daullah, the then Nawab of Bengal, attacked and captured Kolkata. In 1757, Robert Clive of British East India, defeated Siraj-ud-daullah on the battle field of Plassy and recaptured Kolkata. From 1772 to 1912, Kolkata was the capital of British India. In 1899 the electrification of Kolkata was done by CESC.
