INTRODUCTION TO CESC : CESC Limited is
a private power Utility Company generating and distributing power in the city
of Calcutta and its environs having a licensed area of 567 sq. km. It has been
in the business since 1897 when Kolkata, being one of the first major city in
India was electrified commercially. In 2000/01 CESC sold over 5100 MU of
electricity to approximately 1.7 million consumers of which about 1700 numbers
consume power at high voltage. The highest demand so far recorded is over 1200
MW met partially from its own generating capacity of 1065 MW distributed at 5
coal based thermal stations and gas turbine plant supplemented by the import of
power from other external power agencies in public sector. The network from EHV
(132 KV) down to HV (6/11 KV) is almost wholly underground (132 KV 113 ckt kms,
33KV 752 ckt kms, and 6/11 KV 2723 ckt kms). There is, however a mix of OH
& UG in LT distribution (OH 3435 kms, UG 4205 kms). There are approximately
600,000 service outlets.
