| What is CESC's meter reading system? | |
| Our meter readers go door to door reading meters every month. These meter reading data are fed into the computer and bills are raised.About more than 2 million bills are sent to our valued consumers every month. | |
| Why do consumers sometimes get bills based on average meter reading? | |
| Bills based on average meter reading are not part of the normal procedure. However there are times when meters cannot be read due to reasons such as inability to access premises. Only then "average billing" is done. A miniscule percent is based on average billing and such billing in one month automatically comes back to actuals the next time meter is read. | |
| Why does the period of meter reading vary? | |
| CESC is one of the very few power utilities which read meters every month. It is logistically difficult to read all the meters exactly on the 30th day.Recognising this, the law permits power companies to operate within a billing period of 25-35 days. Since 12 monthly bills are raised within a period of 365 days, an extension in one billing period is automatically adjusted by a shorter reading date later. | |
| What is the slab system? does one's entire consumption get billed in one slab? | |
| No, the entire consumption is not billed in one slab. At our initiative, the new slab wise tariff structure was introduced in November 1996, partly to address the difficulty of some consumers who might attract the higher tariff slab in a month where he is on a longer billing cycle. The higher slab now applies only to the incremental units consumed and not on entire consumption. | |
